Obituary for William Corbett Brisbin

William Brisbin
July 23, 1930 – March 11, 2020

William Corbett Brisbin died on March 11, 2020 at the age of 89.
He was born on July 23, 1930 and lived most of his life in Winnipeg.
He was pre-deceased by his wife, Iris and his daughter, Andrea.
Bill is survived by his sister Marnie, daughter Jodie (Billy), son Michael (Charlene), son-in-law Barry, grandchildren Jenna (Phil), Taylor, Mack, and Emma. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Harper and Weston, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was a kind and inspiring man who loved his family.
He was a Professor Emeritus in geology at the University of Manitoba.
Our favourite memories of Papa are: Sunday night dinners, King’s Park walks with his puppy, Mollie, exploring Carmel, California, tinkering on his old army Jeep, and stories about field school and Colorado River rafting.
At Bill’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to a charity of their choice.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the caring staff at Oakview Place.
We will carry you in our hearts forever, Papa. We love you.

Jon Scoates

Bill was a remarkable teacher, mentor and adventurer as has been attested by the legion of students who benefited from his knowledge and his gift of sharing that knowledge in the classroom and in the field. He was my teacher, mentor and friend for sixty years and we shared numerous adventures together. He and Iris were devoted to their family and made me feel like I was part of their extended family. Mary and I extend our condolences to Mike, Jody and Barry and their families.

Brenda Miller

Dear Jodie, Michael, and family - Dignified, yet with a mischievous sense of humour, kind, thoughtful, passionate about his work, and an outstanding teacher... Bill was one of a kind. I loved his stories -- whether of events at field school or on a field trip, or his trips with Iris to Carmel, or travels with Ed Leith, or rafting on the Colorado River -- he could really spin a tale. I will miss him very much. Sincere condolences from Brenda Miller. My husband John also sends along his condolences.

. . . When I came to Manitoba, Bill was the Head of our Department. As I remember, he was such a kind and helpful Head and gentleman in so many ways. I feel terrible now because I cannot even come to his funeral and say the final 'Good Bye' to him because I am in Toronto at our son's. Good Bye, Prof. Brisbin ! Peace be with you !

Marco Morelli

Marco Morelli and Family. Sincere condolences to the Brisbin family. I am forever indebted to Bill for initiating the passion and passing on his deep repertoire of fishing skills to me. Those Wallace Lake trips in the 70s with Mike were so wonderful and memorable. I do recall he scared us to death pretending to be a bear and hiding in the deep woods on us. I also remember the army Jeep rides and the sudden off-roading experiences with Mike and friends that made our hearts jump out of our chests. Bill also came in several times to talk to my Gr.7 students at Lockport school. His tales of being treed on the tree line by a wolf and being trapped on a suddenly active volcano while in the field were spell-binding. He was Indiana Jones and he passed along his passion and vast knowledge of Geology to my students and I. I have many more memories of Bill but too many to list here so I will sign off, and share them with Mike and family at a later time. And will cherish them. Rest in Peace Bill. Heartfelt greetings and condolences to the family. Our hearts are heavy and our thoughts are with you all. Take care and be well. The Morellis
