PAUL ALEXANDER ROD
October 26, 1936 – October 7, 2016
It is with extremely heavy hearts that the Rod family announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. Paul passed away October 7, 2016 at St. Boniface Palliative Care. He was in his seventh courageous year of battling colon cancer. This battle was fought with dignity and strength until the very end.
Paul will be lovingly remembered by his wife Ann, son Perry, daughter Shelley (Richard) and granddaughter Erin.
Paul was born in The Pas, Manitoba. His childhood included living in Gurney Gold, Flin Flon and Cranberry Portage, Manitoba. A remarkable outdoorsman, Dad spent time as a young boy helping his Dad commercial fish and trap. Those experiences helped fuel his desire for working outdoors which led him to begin his career with the CN Telegraph. In his early twenties Dad switched careers and became a Conservation Officer with the Manitoba Government. A very successful 32 year career followed in primarily Northern Manitoba postings except for a brief one and a half year posting in Dauphin, Manitoba. Dad loved his work as it included activities he enjoyed such as boating, bombardiering, snowshoeing and hiking through the bush.
Through the incredible life journey that Dad and Mom had together they made many close and dear lifelong friends. A wonderful retirement saw Dad and Mom living in Cranberry Portage initially, then in Winnipeg. Retirement allowed Dad more time for golfing. A very accomplished golfer Dad achieved two holes-in-one. The first one was at his favourite Phantom Lake Golf Course in Flin Flon where he honed his golf game. His passion for golf continued on with family and friends until recently when his failing health no longer allowed him to do so.
It is the largest of understatements to say that Dad′s incredible sense of humour and his positive, optimistic outlook on life will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Dad will always be fondly remembered in our hearts and minds in so many wonderful ways.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the respectful staff at the Buhler Cancer Care and the fourth floor at Victoria Hospital and St. Boniface Palliative Care for their compassionate and exceptional care.
A private family celebration will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, if friends wish, donations in memory of Paul may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave. Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
