LARRY DOUGLAS WEST
It is with deep sadness we announce Larry West has left this earth to “Fly with the Eagles” on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the age of 80 years. Passing away peacefully at home, Larry will be remembered by his devoted wife of 44 years, Celeste, his brother Glen (Laura) West, brothers-in-law Loren(Jan) Nelson, Wayne Nelson, Roger (Grace) Nelson, Mark Nelson and sisters-in-law Dolores (Ron) Friesen, Marie Beatty (Chantal), Renee Gray (Jeff), his best friend Conrad (Carolyn) Olafson, goddaughter Sarah, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces he loved so dearly. Larry was predeceased by his parents Jack and Millie West, brother Robert and sister Linda, father and mother-in-law Harley & Therese Nelson,.
Larry was born at the Winnipeg General Hospital on June 3, 1942, and grew up on Portland Avenue in St. Vital. Larry and Celeste (nee Nelson) were married on June 3, 1978, and enjoyed a long marriage filled with love and laughter. Larry worked as a Duffy’s Taxi driver before discovering his true calling as a long-haul trucker, a vocation he continued until his retirement. Joining the St. Vital Legion Branch 16, in 1982, Larry transferred to the Transcona Legion Branch 7 in 2002 where he served as Sergeant at Arms, as a member of the Colour Party, and as the Zone 64 Sports Chairman. Larry proudly embraced his Métis heritage. He was also a devoted animal lover and was predeceased by many beloved family pets who have been eagerly awaiting him in heaven.
Larry’s family offer special thanks to the dialysis staff at Health Science Centre (JM5 and 6A), the Manitoba Renal Program, Dr. Zacharias, the many specialists and staff that looked after Larry over the years, as well as the Home Care staff and the Palliative Care Team that made his final wishes positive and comfortable. In accordance with Larry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service is planned in the Spring.
