William John Wintrup

November 1st, Bill Wintrup passed away at his home of over 40 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was predeceased by his parents William and Stephanie (nee Ryplanski) Wintrup.
Bill’s early years were on Borebank Street, with his brothers and sister, Larry, David, Janet (Richard), and Gordon. His love of outdoors started at an early age. He recalled with fondness getting picked up by his Uncle Paul Ryplanski, and with his siblings, to go out to Pinewa and the dam to visit the Ryplanski’s. Outdoor adventures included fishing and hunting. When not outdoors, he spent time as an Air Cadet in his teen years.
Always an outdoor enthusiast, he worked with St. James Assiniboia Streets and Operations, until they merged with the City of Winnipeg, where he was Head Night Foreman when he retired after 47 years of service to the community. He was in his element when a snowstorm would hit the City and he was called out to organize the recovery.
After his marriage to Audrey, and the kids came along and took part in Community Sports, he was busy volunteering at Crestview CC. Over winter he was out flooding rinks, organizing hockey tournaments, and supporting the club's programs. Never one to discuss his volunteerism in the community, it was many years later that we came across his Certificate of Merit from the Federal Government, awarded in 1988 for volunteerism and sport development in Manitoba.
When not outdoors at work or hobbies, summers were enjoyed at Dogtooth Lake at the family place! Once school was out for the kids, everyone loaded up the suburban and headed to Dogtooth! Summers were spent fishing, swimming, and camping. Many enjoyable memories were made with the community at Dogtooth Lake.
In the 1980s a huge fire threatened the town of Kenora and surrounding areas. In service to the community Bill, Dave, and others from Dogtooth did their part to protect the area. Somewhere hangs a photo of this crew on a shoreline next to a fishing boat they used for transportation.
Never one to be idle, Dad enjoyed working with Gene and Harry in the winters after his retirement from the City, especially if the tasked involved tractors and snow!
Bill is survived by Lainie, John, Glen and their mother Audrey, his siblings, and nephews’ Doug, Andrew, Steven, Scott, Greg, and Leigh. In memory of his predeceased fur buddies, Duke, Baron, Stormy, and fur grandbabies, Miskooseepi and Big Mac, the family requests donations to animal rescue agencies in lieu of flowers. There will be no formal funeral ceremony.
