Obituary for Terrence George Winters

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of my dad, Terry Winters, on July 28, 2022 at St. Boniface hospital in Winnipeg, MB. Dad was 72 years old.

He was born Nov. 5, 1949 to George Winters and Viola Wingert at McKellar Hospital in Fort William, ON.

As a child, dad lived on Oliver Rd. and attended Slate River School. In his teens, dad worked at Seed’s farm, in South Gillies.
Not long after, he met the love of his life, my mom, Marlene Hayward. They married on July 24, 1971 and a few years later, started a family. I was born on May 17, 1975 and my brother Ryan, on July 5, 1978.

We lived briefly in Slate River, but soon moved to South Gillies. With his own 2 hands, dad built the house we lived in for 35 yrs.

Dad was always the happiest when he was out in his garage tinkering with something. It didn’t matter what it was, if it was broken, one way or another, he could fix it.

When he wasn’t at work, you could always find him outside in the yard. He spent countless hours mowing the lawn, cutting wood, fixing his tractor or the many other things that Ryan and I had broken, and he especially loved visiting with the many friends and neighbours that would stop by for coffee and a conversation.

Dad loved being around people. He was always such a social butterfly. I would always tag along whenever he would go out visiting friends and family. Those visits are some of my fondest childhood memories.

In my teenage years, I bought my first horse, and with no hesitation, dad built me a barn, and the adventures began.
He took me to countless gymkhanas, parades, and local fairs with my horse Rusty.

He was always my #1 fan.

A few years later, he proudly walked me down the aisle, and shortly thereafter, became the proudest Grandpa to Emmalee and Jillian Jackson.

Years later, both my brother and I moved West to Manitoba. In May, 2012, mom and dad sold the house in South Gillies, and moved to Winnipeg, to be closer to us.

A few short years later, in March 2015, my brother Ryan passed away suddenly at the age of 36.
That profound loss was devastating for all of us. Especially, my mom and dad.

In 2017, he watched happily as my girls walked me down the aisle for the second time.

It was later that year that I started to notice the subtle changes he was going through. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, the early stages of dementia, and Alzheimer’s. As time passed, it became more and more difficult for him to speak. Eventually, he was no longer able to drive, and not too long after that he began having a hard time even walking.
Dad declined quite quickly from there, and we watched him slowly succumb to these illnesses.

He leaves behind his wife, Marlene Winters, myself, Sheila Reda (Claudio) and granddaughters Emmalee and Jillian.
His mother, Viola Wingert, sisters Evelyn (Jim) Morin, Donna (Ed) Brown, Tre Ann-Wyler, Noella (Frank) Logan, Calvin (Wendy) Wingert, and Brenda Ennis. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Terry at the South Gillies Community Centre on September 24, 2022 from 12pm to 4pm.

Rest easy dad, you’ve earned it.
