Obituary for Donald Edward Salter

Donald (Don) Edward Salter, age 81, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022 in the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg.

Don was born on Nov 13, 1940 at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg to Percy and Ethel (Johnson) Salter. On August 26, 1967, with knees knocking together, he married Bernice (Whitehouse) at his sister’s home in Winnipeg, and together raised one son, Donavon.

Don was a sports fan, especially the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He had a passion for automobiles, enjoyed driving, and ran his own driving school. Summer weekends would be spent with family at the cottage near Petersfield. He also loved his dog, Princess, drawing and painting, and performing maintenance around the house. Don was known for his terrific sense of humor and quick, biting wit. A man of few words, but those words were always full of wisdom, kindness, and compassion.

The baby of the family, Don was preceded in death by his father, Percy, his mother, Ethel, brother, Howard, and sisters, Bernice, Ruth, and Vivian He is survived by his wife Bernice, son Donavon (Mira). He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Sarah, Victoria, and Chase, who will remember him always as their Baboo.

He will be remembered especially fondly as an amazing and dedicated father, who would never miss one of his baseball games, by his son, Donavon.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the dedicated and caring support Don received by the staff and management of Deer Lodge Tower 6.

A private family graveside service will be held and the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to either the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation or Alzheimer Society of Canada in Don’s name.
