Obituary for Robert Joseph Malo

Robert Malo passed away suddenly on May 31, 2022 after recovery from a brief illness in hospital. Gone too soon, he leaves us to celebrate his many gifts – the light of community, authenticity and giving - that define his life journey.

Bob was born at St Boniface General Hospital on June 16, 1942 to June and Larry Malo, and also has a sister Melissa in his first family. Robert grew up first at St Joseph’s Orphanage in Winnipeg and then in foster care as a child. He lived in Portage la Prairie for several years. These early years without much family or personal support were a difficult time for him.

Bob or “Red” as he was affectionately known transcended these challenges as he built a family of friends later in life. Bob came to be known within the sphere of Winnipeg Citizen Advocacy where he met Greg Tonn who helped broaden Robert’s community. Bob volunteered regularly at the annual Citizen Advocacy Dessert Party, enjoying the role of welcoming and serving guests. As Bob and Greg’s friendship grew over more than 30 years, Bob became an important part of the families of Greg and his wife, Dhiwya Attawar. Bob was proud to be an honorary uncle to their son, Jaysheel. He celebrated holidays and birthdays over many years with the Tonn and Attawar families.

Bob discovered a vibrant, volunteer community at Winnipeg Harvest (now Harvest Manitoba) where he felt appreciated and acknowledged for his knowledge and abilities. Bob was honored at Harvest with an award for his hard work during 16 years of service. He became very close to the people on his Harvest team including Jamie and Tom who became a valued and trusted friend. Harvest became “Bob’s place” where he felt at home among those who shared a passion for giving back.

A spiritual path was an important part of Bob’s journey. Bob found an accepting community and place at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, after moving to Osborne Village, to practice his faith in God. He formed a special bond with many church and choir members including Bill and Carol Beitzel, who were integral to his church life and who recognized that “Bob was Church”. Bob had a unique connection with the children of the Holy Rosary congregation who he adored, and who were drawn to him and his sense of humour. He enjoyed being an active part of helping with church events, serving as a regular greeter at the 9 a.m. mass and as an enthusiastic baritone in the choir. Here, he was able to shine and to be himself.

Among Bob’s gifts were the genuine kindness, humility, and authenticity that he brought to his relationships. Many in Robert’s circle will not forget receiving the Christmas cards that he faithfully sent year after year. These carefully crafted, multicolor, handwritten Christmas cards signalled the start of the holidays, and reminded Bob’s friends that they mattered. We are blessed by the many gifts Bob left us. Bob showed resilience as he overcame hardship, as well as joy, humour and love that are a part of his legacy.

A funeral service will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, presided by Father Sam, on Thursday, June 9th at 10:00 a.m. to honour Bob’s life. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Harvest Manitoba in Bob Malo’s name.

…I remember, and my soul melts within me: I am on my way to the wonderful Tent, to the house of God…Send out your light and your truth, let these be my guide, to lead me to your holy mountain…
