Obituary for Maria Gilda Rodrigues
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of our mother Maria Gilda Rodrigues, just weeks away from her 78th birthday.
Left to mourn her passing are her six children, Roy(Laura), Nelia(Graham), Manny, Sandy, Connie(Will), Michael and her eight grandchildren, Paul, Dana, Chiara, Miguel, Sienna, Noah, Sarah and Lilah. Also left to mourn are her many nieces, nephews and relatives here in Canada and Portugal.
Maria Gilda was predeceased by her husband Raul Rodrigues, her parents, Manuel and Maria da Conceicao, her brothers, Manuel and Daciel and her sister, Maria Dos Anjos.
Maria Gilda and Raul immigrated to Canada in 1972 with their three oldest children and then had three more children here in Canada. Maria Gilda worked many evening jobs in order to be at home during the day with her children. When her children were older, she worked 25 years at Zellers where she was greatly respected and loved for her strong work ethic and her kind, loving spirit.
Our mother loved her children and her grandchildren and her greatest joy came from her family. Our mom was very religious and got comfort from prayer and reading the Bible and it was this strong faith in God that helped her through her many life challenges, including this last fight with lymphoma. Our mother was brave and fiercely committed to her family and faith. We are so grateful and honoured to have had her in our lives. Our hearts are shattered and we will forever remember her as the kindest and most amazing mother and Avo(Vavo).
A funeral service will be held in her honour at the Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St. at 1:00pm on Wednesday, May 11th with the burial at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.(adjacent to Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens) directly following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
