Obituary for Jannette Anne Kostyk

Janet Anne Kostyk
October 23, 1946 – April 27, 2021

Jan Kostyk (JK) passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 27, 2021. She is lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her partner, Janet Hodgert Figler, by her chosen sons, Gord (Joanna), Frank (Julia), and Jeff (Gayle) and their families, by her sister, Shelia Payne and her family in Thunder Bay, by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and by a host of dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Fred and Rocky Kostyk, and her chosen daughter Charmaine (Brenda) Steeves.

Jan was born October 23, 1946. She spent her early years in Thunder Bay, with brothers Fred and Rocky, and sister Sheila. Jan’s love of sports began at an early age. She was recognized by the Thunder Bay Sports Hall of Fame for her successful career as a fastball pitcher (1961-65), notably for having pitched two consecutive no-hit games. In 1979, after working as a Ward Clerk at Thunder Bay Hospital, JK moved to Calgary. There she met the love of her life, Janet Figler. They were joined in Holy Union in 1981. Jan and Janet relocated to Winnipeg in 1985, to access treatment following JK’s cancer diagnosis.

After Jan recovered, she helped Janet and son Jeff establish Chariot Courier in 1986. Soon after, JK and Janet purchased their ‘vacation paradise’ at Traverse Bay. The ensuing years were filled with the hard work of land clearing and building. Making constant improvements was a labour of love, and was rewarded by the chance to host a never-ending stream of guests. They and their guests also spent a few years enjoying the Manitoba summers at their spot at Oasis Resort.

In 1993, Jan began her twenty year career as a dispatcher for First Choice Courier. JK was a hard-working and respected employee, from the beginning through to her retirement.

In 2004, JK and Janet bought their home on Larsen Avenue in East Kildonan. From then on, Jan spent her time doing what she loved most – gardening (followed around by a succession of oddball cats. Jan loved animals and they loved her), working on home improvements - and entertaining. Lola’s Lounge hosted Blue Bomber and Argo game, and ‘any old excuse’ parties.

And almost every Friday, JK and Janet could be found mingling with dear friends and a wonderful cast of characters at Charlee’s Restaurant and Lounge – for Karaoke and shenanigans. JK had a marvellous sense of humour, including a habit of pulling pranks on the unsuspecting! Despite the pranks, there was no one who did not care for Jan Kostyk.

Jan and Janet’s time together was sometimes touched with sadness, including the loss of their beloved daughter Charmaine. In this and every other challenge, Jan was very supportive of Janet, and of everyone in the Figler and Hodgert families.

Jan and Janet’s life always had one focus. They never strayed far from hearth and home, and they were always devoted to, and unfailingly supportive of family and friends. Jan was an involved, and fun-loving parent, grandparent of nine, and great-grandparent of seventeen.

Janet Anne Kostyk will be missed deeply, but will never be forgotten.
