Magdalena Esquillo Jularbal
September 22, 1936 – March 31, 2021
On March 31, 2021, Magdalena (Maggie) Jularbal, dear sister of Phil and Butch, passed away at the age of 84 years.
Maggie was born in the Philippines on September 22, 1936, and immigrated to Canada in the late 1960s. As a child she was a gifted student and eventually pursued a career in nursing. Throughout her life, she continued to study and earned five degrees (undergraduate, graduate and post graduate) in science/nursing, psychology and rehabilitative counseling. After graduating from nursing school, she worked briefly in her hometown of Baguio City before moving to the U.S. in the 1960s to work at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Maggie joined the Sisters of St. Francis in Minnesota for a period of time before returning to nursing and eventually moving to Winnipeg in the late 1960s. Her time with the Sisters of St. Francis led to her career at the Misericordia School of Nursing, where she worked as a clinical instructor for over 25 years and helped to train countless nurses from Manitoba.
Maggie dedicated much of her personal time to helping her community, especially the Catholic Church. She was honoured to be involved with Pope John Paul II’s visit to Winnipeg in 1984 and remained devoted to her local parish, St. Peter’s Church, where she led its choir and provided prayer support. Her commitment to St. Peter’s Church endured right up until her final days at her long-time home on Avery Drive.
Maggie was also passionate about the Filipino community and served as presidents for the Philippine Association of Manitoba and the Philippine Nurses Association of Manitoba.
Maggie is survived by her brothers Phil and Butch; sisters-in law Ninfa and Jennifer, nieces Jennifer (Chris), Jaclyn (Darryl), Savannah, Andrea (Roger); grand-nephews Michael, Roman, Max; grand-niece Jasmine; and extended family and friends in the Philippines and abroad.
The family would like to thank the staff at Misericordia Place for their patience and care in the final stage of her life.
