Obituary for Margaret Isabell Mikolaychuk
Margaret Mikolaychuk (Margit Isabell Nelson)
October 12, 1929 – December 17, 2020
After a heard fought battle with dementia and other ailments, Margaret passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday, December 17, 2020 in her favorite season, Christmas time, at the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care home.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter and son-in-law Barb and Ray St. Hilaire, sister Joan (Melvin) Neimi, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Johnny in 2010 and son Gary in 2008, sisters Ella and Lil, and brother George.
Margaret was born October 12, 1929 in old Pinawa, Manitoba to parents Carl and Anna Nelson. At a young age , she moved to Winnipeg with her sister Lil and worked at the Nutty Club candy factory and later Perth’s Drycleaners. Then she received a job offer to work at the Pointe du Bois General Store where she met her future husband Johnny Mikolaychuk who she married on August 8, 1953. They raised their children, Barb and Gary, and enjoyed living in Pointe for 51 years until 2004 when health issues necessitated a move to Lac du Bonnet.
Mom loved the country life in Pointe and was an accomplished homemaker and baker. She loved curling, cross country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter months, and in the summer she enjoyed boating and fishing, blueberry picking, gardening, and especially enjoying a glass of red wine with friends and neighbours in their beautiful yard. She loved to travel, especially to visit her sister Ella in Sweden, and numerous hot spot destinations in the winter months.
She was a woman of strong faith, a Sunday School teacher for many years, and always has a soft spot for animals, including the wild ones that roamed the bush in Pointe. Her last pet before she left Pointe was a feral cat that she and Dad slowly tamed over the course of one summer until he happily moved indoors in the fall. As children, we couldn’t leave the movie Old Yeller until Mom composed herself because she couldn’t stop crying over the sad ending.
Deepest appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home who took such exceptional, compassionate care of Mom for her final 3 years.
