Sophie Dafnis
September 9, 1936 – November 20, 2020
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Sophia Dafnis on November 20, 2020 in Winnipeg.
Sophia was born on September 9, 1936 in Athikia, Korinthia, GREECE. She was predeceased by her Husband Michael, sisters Marika, Venetia and children Kathy and John. Left to mourn her loss is her Daughter Helen (Sotiris) and grandchildren Spiro and Sophia, Son Jim (Theofili) and grandchildren Michael and Spiro, Sister Dimitra (George), Daughter-in-law Natalina, and extended family and friends in Canada and Greece.
Sophia emigrated to Canada in 1958 with her sister Marika. She was fiercely independent and determined as she navigated a new country as a single woman. She was trained as a seamstress and worked in the fur industry with Hurtig Furs and Eaton’s during Winnipeg’s heyday as a fur shopping destination until her retirement in 1997.
Sophia returned to Greece then married her husband Michael in 1962. They both returned to Winnipeg to start their family. She was proud to raise her children in the Greek Community and with her husband by her side, and ensured her children were actively engaged in the St. Demetrios church and community.
Sophia loved spending time with her friends and being a part of many social and philanthropic groups. She was president of the Daughters of Penelope Association, an active member of the Ladies of Philoptochos and Eaton’s Retirement Club. She made deep rooted connections with many people throughout the years and she was blessed to have the ongoing support of her friends.
Although Sophia was faced with many hardships in life, she remained stoic no matter the challenge. She found joy in her children and grandchildren. She remained the rock in our family until it was our turn to care for her.
The family would like to thank all the staff on 2 East at Maples Personal Care home, especially Carmelita who cared for our mother with the utmost love and compassion.
Due to current public health restrictions, a private ceremony will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church followed by interment at Brookside Cemetery. The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox church.
