Bertha Pasieka
February 6, 1919 – October 19, 2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Bertha on October 19, 2020 at the age of 101 years young, loving wife of Michael (Blackie) and devoted mother to Pat and Debbie. Her husband, after almost 63 years of marriage, predeceased Bertha as well as her infant daughter Diane, seven sisters and one brother, and her son-in-law Ray.
Bertha will be dearly missed by: daughters Patricia Evans and Debra Allen (husband Ron); grandchildren--Randy Evans, Chris Evans (wife Sherri), Ryan Allen (wife Kellie and great grandchildren Eli and Katherine), and Dustin Allen; brother Roy Petrie and many nieces, nephews and all who knew her.
Bertha was born in Lac du Bonnet on Feb. 6th 1919, and spent most of her adult life in Tyndall and then Winnipeg. Her love of life, athletic ability and sense of humour served her well throughout her 101 years. Bertha’s love of gardening was shared with her lifelong friend Olga Luby in Tyndall where she was a baseball star, an avid swimmer and a graceful dancer with a love of music. She excelled in bowling and won numerous trophies and awards and also was Ladies Senior Billiard Champion. She served on the Ukrainian Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She loved Bingo and won quite often.
Before retiring, Bertha worked at Clifford’s Ladies Wear in Winnipeg’s North End and also sold Avon, making many lasting friendships. Her nephew, Garry Palidwor cooked many delicious meals for her and got her out to bingo and on occasion to the casino, and for decades was her personal hairdresser. Her close friend/‘adopted daughter’ Carol Hapko had been Bertha’s main caregiver for the last 20+ years and Bertha became a much-loved member of Carol’s family. Accompanied by Carol, Bertha took her first flight at age 89 to her niece Doreen’s and spouse Colin’s home east of Ottawa. Her sister Lorraine Marcolini with daughter Rochelle and husband Ernie Di Iorio managed a long drive to attend the joyous mini-reunion. Those memories will be cherished forever. Bertha then got the travelling bug and twice more visited her niece as well as both of her daughters and their families in New Hampshire and North Carolina.
Special thanks to all—family and many, many friends—that visited and cared for Bertha throughout the years. We send a special tribute to all the wonderful, caring staff at Donwood Manor and especially Ruth and Joy, who assisted in Bertha’s long distance communication with her family. The family applauds Donwood Manor for the excellent care Bertha received. Bertha’s 100th Hawaiian Birthday was celebrated there with many friends and family in attendance—a wonderful celebration of this inspirational and much-loved mother, sister, aunt and friend.
Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Now God has a new Angel in Heaven.
