Obituary for Giuseppe Aiello

Giuseppe (Joe) Aiello
December 20, 1929 – March 12, 2020

He liked being called Joe, Papa Joe from his daughter-in-law, Claudia, Nanutz, a name developed from his eldest granddaughter Kelly and passed down to his other two granddaughters, Maria-Christina and Kaitlin. Dad from sons, Vince and Remo and Compare Joe from so many, the list would seem endless. He arrived in Canada in 1951, followed two years later by the love of his life, his wife Maria and his son Vince. He help sponsor numerous family and friends from his beloved village of San Mango d’Aquino; starting with brother Frank and wife Maria who gave us our lovely extended family Joe (spouse, Linda and son Frank), Angelina (spouse, Jack Morgante and daughter Poalina) and Mario (spouse, Tes and son, Marcello and daughter, Mimi) and brother Mario and his love, Albina. Joe’s work in Canada included working on the Spences Bridge in British Columbia, being the proud owner of Aiello Grocery on Corydon Avenue, in addition to a restaurant. A born entrepreneur, he was always willing to take on any job with passion and commitment, he made many friends over the years, lovingly telling his stories from his time working at the Fort Garry Hotel and all the joy that brought. He ended his working career from the Hudson Bay Company, in the grocery store division. Joe loved his garden, making the special pepper paste necessary for the home-made sausage, pressing the grapes for his beloved vino and of course, making salsiccia and capocollo alongside his wife Maria and the extended family of his cousins and friends. He helped form the Societa San Mango d’ Aquino, original members from their home village in Italy, an organization still active today. While Bocce was his game of choice, most often you would find him sitting at a table, eating great homemade Italian food and sweets, and playing cards with friends and family. Joe was an outdoorsman, loving to hunt for rabbits and birds, and the annual running of the smelts in Thunder Bay, to be brought home and prepared by Mama Maria. He had laughter and love in abundance for his family and everyone he met, enjoyed sharing stories and giving a helping hand to anyone in need. Truly a jewel to be missed.
