Obituary for Rosa Nucci

Rosetta “Rosa” Nucci
July 18, 1938 – January 19, 2020
“Heaven Truly Gained An Angel”

On Sunday, January 19, Rosetta was reunited with her husband Gino.

Her strength and courage this last year and a half were a true testament of the strong woman she was.

Rosetta was born on July 18, 1938 in Grimaldi Italy. She came to Canada in 1961 alongside her husband Gino and infant son Sebastiano, making Winnipeg her new home. Shortly after arriving in Winnipeg, she started working in the garment industry, quickly making lifelong friends who had also arrived from Italy a short time before.

In 1964 her daughter Maria was born, and it was at that time that Rosetta and Gino started thinking about venturing into business on their own. Nucci’s Italian Variety Shop came to be in 1968, selling such items as magazines, records, fine china, marble tables, porcelain dolls and bomboniere, all imported from Italy. It was at this store that Rosetta once again made many more lifelong friends.

Rosetta and Gino would again establish another business in 1971, Calabria Club, just a few doors down from the variety shop and she would work countless hours in both businesses. It was then that Rosetta and Gino would start experimenting in the making of “Gelati”

Rosa’s Restaurant came to be in 1980 and Rosetta would share her love of Italian food, preparing many amazing dishes for the many customers who became and remain friends today.

Nucci’s projects came and went but it was “Gelati” that they had a passion for. This brought on their final venture “Nucci’s Gelati.”

Together Rosetta and Gino created a legacy. The many friends from the garment factory, Variety Shop, Calabria Club, Rosa’s Restaurant along with new customers from all over the world would come in for their famous Gelati!

Like many others, Rosetta and Gino came from a foreign country, not knowing a word of english, in spite of some of these challenges they provided for and loved their little family with all their hearts.

Corydon Avenue, where all the Nucci establishments were built was home to Rosetta and Gino for over 50 years. Along with many other restaurants, bars and shops, Rosetta and Gino were instrumental in creating “Little Italy” which everyone came to love.

Mamma/Nana you had a way with people and you were loved by all……Especially us !!

Riposa in Pace

The family would like to thank palliative and home care staff for their compassion and support in ensuring that Rosetta was comfortable.

Rosetta was predeceased by her husband Gino, her parents, mother and father-in-law, siblings and nephews.

She is survived by her son Sebastiano, her daughter Maria (Michael) and her grandchildren Nikolas and Rachel; brothers Luigi (Anna), Mario (Rosetta) brother and sister-in-law, Emilio and Teresa, sister-in-law Jennie and numerous nephews and nieces in Italy and Winnipeg.
