Obituary for Pietro Cicco

Pietro Cicco
June 26, 1934 – June 11, 2019

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved father, grandfather (nonno) and husband, Pietro (Peter) Cicco on June 11, 2019 at the age of 84.

Our Nonno will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving wife Maria of 60 years, their children Marisa Cicco and Franco (Ivy) Cicco and grandchildren Anna-Maria Trotta, Mario and Adriano Sacco, Christopher and Braeden Cicco. He was predeceased by his parents Vittoria (nee Sacco) & Giovanni Cicco and his daughter Victoria (Vickie) Cicco.

Pietro was born in San Mango D'Aquino, Italy on June 26, 1934. As a young man, he travelled to Northern Italy, Germany and Switzerland to work. He worked in a greenhouse, trained in the military, and did mining work for the Department of Highways in Southern Italy.

In 1967, he and Maria, with their young daughters, Victoria & Marisa, decided to embark on a journey to start a new life in Canada aboard the Leonardo DaVinci ship. Although a piece of his heart was left in Italy, he and Maria progressed and created a successful, fulfilling life in Winnipeg. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Victoria, Marisa, and Frank, that he was so proud of. He provided for his family by working hard all of his life as a tradesperson, primarily at Federal Pioneer until he retired in 1994.

Pietro was extremely devoted to his family, helping them in countless ways with his generosity and selflessness. Family always came first and foremost in his eyes and was his life's purpose. His great joy came when his house was full of his children and grandchildren. He was always genuine and faithful to all of his friends and would bring up many fond memories he had with them.

He was a wise and intellectual man full of honesty, integrity and love. His kind soul would embrace you, just by looking at his smile and eyes that would fill your heart. He would tell you the honest truth. His advice was simple. If you were ever in doubt, you could count on him for guidance.

Pietro loved the outdoors and staying active. His appreciation for nature's beauty was signified by the great pleasure he took in gardening. He grew an abundance of fruit and vegetables each year, creating impressive gardens. His passion for gardening began as a youth when he worked at a greenhouse near Sanremo, Italy. He loved his grape vines, apple, plum and apricot trees. He would plant a tree and say, "Once I'm gone, you'll all remember the trees I planted that will continue to grow and give you fruit once I'm no longer here." He took great joy in sharing his organic fruits, vegetables and wine with family, friends and neighbours.

Pietro always enjoyed fishing (mostly at the cottage), riding his bike around Fort Garry, tending to his small hobby farm of rabbits and pigeons, and wine making. He enjoyed listening to country music and watching "cowboy movies" (spaghetti westerns), wrestling, and nature documentaries. He loved spending time at the cottage, which he built with his son, Frank. He was a great handyman and could build many things from scratch. His skills were amazing as he was a hard worker with hands of steel. The small momentos such as handmade tools and baskets will always be treasured as a testament to his craftsmanship.

For many years and as long as he was able to, Pietro exercised at the Reh-Fit Centre. Fitness was important to him as he realized its contribution to the maintenance of his overall health. He also loved to read and would visit the Millennium Library downtown often where he read through the entire Italian section. Every time he finished a book, he would sign it. Needless to say, there are many books around left with his mark. He had a great personal collection of encyclopedias, atlases, and biblical stories, and would take great interest in studying them.

Although life posed many health issues over the years, he persevered and fought through it all by remaining positive and demonstrated a strong zest for life. He was and always will be an inspiration to us. His memory will live on as a constant reminder to enjoy the little things and to stay strong through the hard times because life, as precious and fragile as it is, is worth every moment.

We will always love and remember our Nonno and the cherished memories we shared together. Our family takes great comfort in knowing he is now with Victoria. May he rest in everlasting peace. Until we meet again.

He Only Takes The Best

A heart of gold stopped beating,
hard working hands went to rest,
God took you home to prove to us,
he only takes the best.
Heartaches in the world are many,
But losing you was worse than any.
It will be lonely here without you,
We will miss you more each day,
For life will not be the same for us.
Since you've been called away,
We will always remember the way you looked,
the way you walked and smiled,
all the things you did for us,
will be with us all the while.
You always did your best,
your heart was true and tender,
you lived your life for those you loved,
and those you loved will remember.
