Obituary for Catherine Jennie Sherbo

Our mom died on April 24, 2019, surrounded by love. Predeceased by her husband Tony in 1992, left to honour her memory are her son Charles (Dawn) and daughter Teresa Cameron (Doug), grandchildren Ehren Sherbo, Giana Sherbo (Marc Deschouwer) great-grandson Duke and great-grandbaby #3 Deschouwer (on the way), Celia Fergusson (Owen) great-granddaughter Emme, and Rachel Cameron (Austin). She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Virginia Cosentino and Rose Sherbo, her cousin Bernice Herd, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was the eldest of three siblings; when our grandfather lost his vision as the result of car/pedestrian accident in 1938, family responsibilities fell to her. Although wanting to attend university, after graduating grade 11 from Daniel McIntyre, she learned a trade and became a gifted seamstress. Many a bride in Winnipeg was graced with a gown made by our mother. She created her own patterns to give the bride exactly what she wanted!
Our dad first met mom when he was 19 and she was a 13 year old visiting his sister. He leaned down to his sister and said "I’m going to marry your friend." Fifteen years later, and after numerous proposals, our parents married on July 5, 1947, and celebrated 45 years of marriage a few months before dad died.
Our parents took a trip to Italy in 1981, and the travel bug took hold. They had many wonderful trips together, and after our dad died, mom continued to find joy in travelling. After trips further afield became difficult, mom would go "across the border" to close-by casinos. And when that became challenging, monthly Villa Cabrini trips to Winnipeg casinos continued to bring activity to her life.
Everyone congregated at our home, especially at Christmas, New Years and Easter. There was always room around the table, and always delicious food to share, or as our Nanna would say "aggiungere acqua al brodo". She always made it seem so effortless. After most family weddings, back to Wilton Bay it would be, for visiting and laughter around the kitchen table.
Mom was a devoted Roman Catholic, lifelong member of Holy Rosary and member of the Catholic Women’s League, with which she served in executive capacities on the local and national levels.
A few years after our dad died, mom moved into Villa Cabrini. She lived there until only a few days before she died. At the time of her death she was the oldest and longest residing resident. After moving there, her commitment as a volunteer continued, in many capacities.
Although in recent years failing eyesight presented challenges, mom continued with the activities that brought her joy as long as she could - her breakfast time crossword puzzles, card playing, bingo, knitting and crocheting. Babies too numerous to count, all around North America, have something knitted or crocheted by "Aunty"/"Nanna" Kae.
And let’s not forget the Bombers and the Jets. Her beloved Jets. Although in hospital, she watched the playoffs with hope and cheered hard till the last game. It was fitting that her room at the Victoria Hospital had a view of Investors Stadium.
Our mom considered herself to be greatly blessed, by the love of family and many great friends. Her love was unconditional. Mom will be remembered for her giving nature, her warm and loving heart and devotion to her family.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 from Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave., Winnipeg, MB., Rev. Father Sam Argenziano Presiding.
The family thanks the staff at Victoria Hospital, 4N for their care, especially Elaine and Kim for their gentleness and treating our mom with dignity.
