Obituary for Florence Ziegler (Swiskoski)

Florence Ziegler
(nee Swiskoski)
October 13, 1929 – November 6, 2018

Peacefully, at the Grace Hospice, Florence Ziegler (Swiskoski) passed away on November the sixth at the age of 89. Mom will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter Carol Kurbis, son-in-law Tim, and grandchildren Graham and Garrett. Mom is also survived by her sisters Irene Currie of Winnipeg and Tessie Kostenchuk of Neepawa, numerous nieces and nephews, and many close friends. She was predeceased by her husband Fred in 1999, after 34 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her sister Rita Gulas and husband Ed, sister Anne Ostrowski and husband Willie, brother in law Al Currie, and brother in law John Kostenchuk, as well as sisters-and-brothers-in-law Mary and Bill Whisnant, Lois and Clem Michaels, and Kay and Ed Barteaux.

Mom was born in Rosedale Municipality near Mountain Road in 1929, one of five girls of Frank and Francis Swiskoski. She was raised on the family farm and moved to Winnipeg in her late teens. She started her career at Weston's bakery, where she developed an amazing skill at cake decorating. She retired from her position at Weston’s when she married Fred, but her baking didn’t stop, with many birthday and wedding cakes planned, baked and lovingly decorated over the years for family and friends.

Mom married Fred in 1965, and settled in Transcona where they raised their daughter Carol. Mom was a sports enthusiast, and enjoyed playing golf and curling in younger years. She loved the outdoors, spending many summers in Sioux Lookout with Fred and Carol, or later at Clearwater Bay with the Kurbis family. In later years, she remained interested in sports, whether watching on TV or attending her grandchildren’s games. She was also an avid card player, and developed many close friends in recent years through that pastime.

Mom’s greatest joy was her family. She was our biggest cheerleader, no matter what we did. She looked after her grandsons part-time throughout their childhood, and they will have many fond lifetime memories of their Granny. She was always up for any adventure, which often involved her sister Irene. Despite many years of living with cancer, it rarely impacted her ability to live life fully.

We would like to thank the Palliative Care staff at St. Boniface Hospital and the Grace Hospice for their wonderful compassionate care. A special thank you goes to Dr. Andrew Cooke and Dr. Nene Rush for their excellent care of my Mom.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mom’s name to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, or any charity of your choice.

Funeral Service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 11:00 AM, Pastor Chris Bishopp officiating. Interment in Transcona Cemetery
