Obituary for Assunta Caci (Zammito)

Assunta Caci
April 2, 1933 – July 8, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother and Nonna, Assunta Caci (Zammito) on Saturday, July 8, 2017.

She was predeceased by her husband Vincenzo, her son Salvatore (Sam), and her brother Carmelo Zammito.

Assunta will be missed by her sons John (Rose) and Luigi (Anita); her grand-children Melissa (Brad), Michelle (Travis), Chris (Lynnette), Bianca, Isabella, Vincenzo, Lilly and Marco and seven great grandchildren. Also mourning her loss, her brother Rosario (Francesca) Zammito, sisters Giovanna (Raimondo), Maria (Giovanni), Carmelina (Giuseppe); her nieces, Giuseppina and Franca; and many relatives in Belgium and Sicily.

Mom was born in Aragona, Sicily on April 2, 1933. She devoted her adolescent years to helping her parents tend to the well-being of her siblings. She married at the young age of 19 and was a proud mother to Salvatore (Sam), Calogero (John), and Luigi (Lou). In 1965, after living in Stuttgart, Germany for a short time, Assunta, Vincenzo, Sam and John moved to Winnipeg in hopes of giving her sons a better opportunity. Her ambition was to make sure her sons did well for themselves and she did everything she could to help them.

Mom’s lifelong struggle with Diabetes never kept her down. She was a hardworking and steadfast woman. She worked full time as a seamstress and double time as a mother. Her three sons and her grand-children were her most devout pride and joy. She loved cooking her traditional Sicilian meals, which were always a family favourite. She loved gardening at home and the family cottage in Glen Bay, RM of Gimli. Mom loved spending her summers at the cottage and watching her family grow brought her joy. As Mom’s health slowly failed and dementia set in, her family was still her life core. She remembered most family faces, talked about the past as though it were the present, always charmed us with her singing of lovely Sicilian songs and reciting poetry with utmost joy in every expression.

A special Thank You to the staff at Meadowood Manor for our Mother’s care and compassion.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Condolences will be offered at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Father Sam Argenziano celebrant.
